I have some Valentine’s Day history to share with you. Have you ever wondered where or how Valentine’s day started? Has it always been so commercial or was there some actual meaning behind this day that represents love and caring?

As you know, I am a researcher by nature and this is something that I thought I would look into since this famous and loving Holiday is fast approaching. We all could use some history now and again. It also makes for great conversation and icebreaker on that first date. Especially if it happens to be on that most romantic of Holidays – Valentine’s Day.

WHO WAS ST. VALENTINE

St. Valentine was an actual 3rd-century Roman Saint.  Can you imagine.  He was essential in the ministering of persecuted Christians during that time.  It seems as if he was also sort of a rebel, from my readings.  He truly followed his calling in that all people had the right to learn about God, even those being persecuted and not exactly recognized by the Roman church. valentine's day history

St. Valentine was later executed for these practices; however and many celebrate his passing with the Feast of Saint Valentine or most places Valentine’s Day.  Supposedly, there were relic and other holy artifacts that were displayed around his burial site that people would journey to see.  A pilgrimage was started by several different groups to visit his resting place to honor his good deeds.  Later, these relic were moved to a church to put on display.  It is said that his skull was decorated with flowers and taken to Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Rome.  Some of the other relics of him were taken to Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church in Dublin, Ireland, where they remain today for you to visit.

VALENTINE’S DAY HISTORY: THE GIFT

The Valentine’s Day history is also somewhat vague as to where the gift giving actually can into the picture. There seems to be a rumor that upon his execution, St. Valentine wrote a letter to one of the people he performed a miracle on and signed it with,  “your Valentine”.   Since we have no way to prove this, it is considered only a legend.  However, it does give life to the culture of love and careful that this day now represents.

This would explain the idea of giving a card that expresses your love for your significant other or potential lover. Given the history of St. Valentine, signing your name to words of love and affection, represents the sacrifice and the depth of your devotion and care. The death of St. Valentine has also become a day of celebration in remembrance of the great deeds and his devotion to his beliefs. The giving of gifts and flowers is associated with this celebration.

As a result of these things, I believe this is what has given us our current status in our Valentine’s Day celebration and gift giving. Not only in remembrance of this great Saint, but to continue what his name represents, the celebration of life through loving each other. Not only with words and deeds but an outward showing with gifts. Show someone you are thinking of them this Valentine’s Day!!! Chocolate, roses and fine wines!!!

TYPES OF GIFTS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY

FLOWERS AND CHOCOLATES

Flowers and chocolates seem to be the favorites. I know that I love to receive them anytime of the year. But Valentine’s Day appears to be the biggest day for these special gifts. Having flowers sent to your home, work or office just seems to make everyone envious that you were thought of on this special day.

Chocolates are a must for me on this day as well. Nothing says “I love you” better than a deep, rich, sweet milk chocolate. Or there are those who prefer the dark chocolates. Either way, it is still chocolate and worthy of your loved one.

DIAMONDS AND ACCESSORIES

As Marilyn Monroe stated so eloquently: Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.

Diamonds are the ultimate gift for any occasion.  Engagements seem to center around Valentine’s day.  Not only is it a romantic day, but you will never forget the day you were engaged.

From earrings to necklaces, diamonds come in all styles and shapes.  Every girl, and I think men as well, should have a couple of them included in their accessories.  Nothing makes the bland look fashionable like some bling… And we all know that diamonds are the ultimate bling!!!

There are other gifts as well that help to say “I Love You” or “Thinking of You” that we all love and enjoy so well. A great steak, especially pair with a great Ricord Merlot, with a roaring fire or romantic setting is a great way to show your appreciate to your significant other. But you know something, a great wine from Napa and Sonoma Valleys makes for a wonderful gift anytime of the year!!! Have romance and excitement everyday with this amazing monthly wine club. Easy to join and in time for the Holidays or to stock up for those special occasions.

WINE FOR ALL OCCASIONS – NOT ONLY VALENTINE’S DAY

Nothing goes better with flowers, chocolates and a romantic dinner than a bottle of great wine!!! Wine has its own culture in romance. Here in the US, we are revitalizing that culture. Since prohibition, we have had to climb our way back into this culture. Playing catch-up to the other countries is fast becoming our favorite game. With our great wineries in Napa and Somona Valleys as well as the other great vineyards across these great United States, we are finally getting our act together.

So why not do your part by celebrating not only Valentine’s day, but all of your special occasions with a great bottle of fine wine made right here in the US. Say those special words with a wonderful bottle of chilled Sauvignon Blanc or have some dark chocolates with a nice Merlot. The best part, you can have them delivered to your door and have them ready for Valentine’s Day or any other occasion that needs a bottle of fine wine.

CONCLUSION – VALENTINE’S DAY HISTORY

So, here are my thoughts about our great Valentine’s day history. Although St. Valentine was basically a martyr for his beliefs, we honor him with his own special day. As a result, it has become a day of poems of love and affection with a wide variety of gifts to compliment those words. Saying “I Love You” can be easily said without meaning them. But it seems to me by putting actions and meaning behind them with a thoughtful gift, makes those three words take on a lot stronger meaning.
