How to get started
It is not always easy to do something for the first time. However, I have discovered that if you have a plan in place, then it becomes quite simple. Today, we are going to plan on how to have a wine social/tasting. The best thing about our wine business is that you don’t have to drink wine to market it. Or even to have a social or tasting event. With some research and study, you can have a great event. This outline is one that I use whenever I am planning not only a wine social but any event.
- How many people do I want to invite
- Chose the setting or venue
- What is your theme for the event
- Food and pairings and prizes
- Presentation
- Thank you
The invite
Remember, this is not only a social/tasting but also a business presentation. So be professional. Know your people. Invite those you know that not only will be interested in what you are presenting but also those who love wine
Host like a pro
From my research and hosting my own socials, there are a few things you need to know about a wine tasting.
Most people don’t know how to properly taste a wine. Most just pour it, drink and swallow. However, there is an art to it. It is called the 5 S’s.
The Five S’s To Wine Tasting
- See the wine – color is the key. Reds lose color the older it is. Going from brown to burgundy. Whites go from yellow to golden to brown – the darker the color of the wine – the more full-bodied the flavor will be.
- Swirl – on a flat surface, they need to swirl the wine in the glass. This will help to aerate the wine and bring out the aroma and flavors associated with the wines.
- Sniff – Now, this is not the place to be shy. Stick your nose down into the glass almost touching the liquid and take a good sniff. This is where you will be able to distinguish the aromas and smells of the wine. You will smell smoky, fruits, earth, veggies, sweets and such depending on the wine and where the grapes came from.
- Sip – take a sip of the wine. While in your mouth, swish it around. Almost like you would mouthwash. Your whole mouth will be able to enjoy this sensation. Your tongue will be able to sense the various properties of the wine.
- Swallow/Spit – Then to finalize the tasting, swallow the wine. Feel how is goes down and what you taste as it does. But remember, if you more than one wine to taste, you will need to have a spit bucket. I know this sounds a bit disgusting, but you don’t want your house full of inebriated guest.
Now, before they sample the next wine, you need to start with a clean palate. This can be done with plain water. Not flavored. To further clean your palate, a small taste of bread or unflavored cracker will help absorb the previous wine and ready your palate for the next.
Venue – The Happening Place To Be
Based on the amount of people who have accepted your invitation, then you need to select where you want to host your event. If it is a small setting, your home or a host home would be wonderful. This is perfect if this is your first planned event. If you are a pro and have a few under your belt, then a bigger venue can be selected. Indoor or outdoor, would be your next topic. If the weather is good, with cool -too windy, then indoors would be better. Remember, you will be presenting an invitation to join your program so make sure that your voice can be heard where ever you chose to host your event.
Foods and pairings – Wine Tasting
Again depending on your venue, you can have something as simple as finger foods and or you can go all out and have a full meal.
Some ideas would be like:
- Deviled eggs
- Finger sandwiches
- Meat trays
- Veggie trays
- Fruit trays
- Quiches in bite sizes
- Pizza bites
- You also want to have some sweets:
- Milk and dark chocolates
- Maybe a fondue tray
- Brownies
- Pies
- Mousse
- Cake
Have a white and red at each station. However, explain what goes best each food. But let them taste for themselves to see how their palate distinguishes from the different wines.
Give them time to mix and mingle at each station.
Presentation:
After a bit, gather your guest and present your wine club. Show them how they can come in as a customer. Explain the benefits of our amazing program. Also, let them know that we have an awesome opportunity for them to not only earn free wine but also the potential to make income.
Have a couple of computers up and available for them to not only sign up for your program, but also to register with your email program for future updates.
Prizes: Wine Tasting
I always have a few prizes to give away just as a thank you and appreciation for them coming.
- A chocolate basket – with bottle of wine and several sweet goodies – I usually give this to first customer signup
- A wine and cheese basket – I give this to the first Ambassador that signs that night.
- Single bottles – These are a couple of our favorite labels to give at your discretion. Either for a trivia question or who came the farthest, guessing game, numbers game – you choose.
Then thank everyone for coming and let them know you will be around for a few minutes to answer any questions.
I hope this helps you in your journey to developing your amazing wine business. Thank you for your time and patience and have a wonderful weekend.
