Earth-bound foods are what I call veggies that grow from the ground. In other words, you plant them in the ground and they grow from a seed or seedling. Water type plant-based foods
As the the earth is encompassed with more water than land in some places, it stands to reason that it also yields edible food for both human and animal. The plants available and edible are some you may already be using. I know in salads, casseroles and even seasoning, some of these plants are great tasting. Plants like water cress, Lebanese cress (also known as Croatian cress, Kang kong (water spinach), water chestnuts, edible taro, water parsley, water mint can be a great addition to your garden, and extend the range of greens you have available over summer. What is plant based foods is something I have been interested in for quite a while. With so many of my friends either vegan or vegetarian, I was interested in what all the hype was about.
According to an article in read in Eat Well Magazine-Special Edition, the plant based phenomenon is on the rise. Did you know that there are over 16 million vegetarians out there. They eat no meat, fish or poultry. However, the do consume eggs and some dairy products. Another 1 million vegans are out there. They eat no meat or meat products at all!!! Only veggies or plant based products for them.
Here is a new distinction that this article defined – flexitarian. It is the equivalent of a semi-vegetarian. In other words, it is someone who lives the vegetarian lifestyle but occasionally enjoys a meat product. However, I am a confirmed carnivore!!! I love my meats. All meats. Albeit, I still enjoy a good salad or the occasional veggie binge while watching TV or working. Nothing curbs my appetite like some sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots and celery with some blue cheese or ranch dressing. I also enjoy some apple slices, strawberries, cantaloupe, pears, blueberries or grapes paired with some caramel sauce and yogurt. Then pair it with a chilled white wine or rose wine and you have your very own party!!!
What to eat
According to this article, leafy greens have been associated with slower-age related cognitive decline. Consuming 1.3 helpings of this seems to what the study shows. Cauliflower, broccoli, beets, brussell sprouts, potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, mustard greens, collards, kelp, kale, squash, zucchini, carrots and cucumbers are just a few of the veggies you can eat. However, sometimes it takes a bit to get used to some of them. But guess what, you don’t have to eat them all!!! Find the ones that you enjoy and then experiment with the others as you grown in your plant-based journey.
For proteins, Legumes are great. Black beens, limas, kidney beans, peas, string beans are some ways to help get your protein without the meat. However, if you are like me and like meat, it is just extra to serve with the meal.
