The grape is delicious in all forms that we partake it. I especially love to eat them straight from the vine. The grape has a natural sweetness that is both flavorful as well as filling. Just having that juicy flavor burst into your mouth on a hot day quenches your thirst almost as well as water. The grape also have several uses that most of us use in some form or fashion. Let’s have a look and see which you use the grape for.
The Grape, Wine and the Bible
It seems from the beginning of time the grape has always been a stable for any meal, snack or gathering. With its many uses, it is not wonder that would be the case. The Greeks had a god called Dionysus. He was the god of wine. The Greeks used the time of harvesting the grape as a time for celebration. His celebrations revolved around the grape cultivation, the making of wine, fertility and the theater.
Also, most Jewish religion have a basis with the grape and wine. During the time of Jesus and the bible, most of the water sources were not drinkable. They were just beginning to learn about filtering their water. Most people used community wells and pools to drink from, including their animals and livestock. This was not a very sanitary time. As a result, people would get sick just from drinking the water. Because of this, wine became the drink of choice. Back then, anything made from the grape was considered wine, whether it was fermented or not.
If you were visiting friends or family, they would serve the “good wine” first. This was usually the fermented and aged wines. As the time you spent with them prolonged, you may be served the “common” wine, which was basically grape juice. Due to the distilling process of making wine, the beverages made with the grape became the preferred drink. It was deemed healthier to drink and less likely to make you sick. At the time, they did not realize that by boiling and distilling the juice helped to kill the bacteria that was in the water making them sick.
Other History Of Wine
During the Renaissance era, the making of wine and mead became another use of the grape. However, grain was then introduced as a viable option to make suitable drinks. Hence, mead and beer was formed. However, the grape was still the choice to make the best beverages of wine. The types of wine you produced or had actually helped determine your status in the community. The better your wines, the higher up in society you were considered.
Even today, wine is still used in the observance in religious ceremonies. The Sacrament or Lord’s Supper uses wine as a representation of the blood of Christ, which they also used in the Lord’s supper the night Jesus was betrayed by Judas. Most churches use grape juice today. However, it still comes from the grape.
So, if you are using religious beliefs as to why you do not believe in wine, that is totally your preference. In my Bible, he speaks of those leading others to not partake in strong drink. I perceive that as liquors, not wine or beer. However, that is a judgement call based on how you interpret the Bible. Also, if you have an issues with consuming any types or alcohol and you believe it will interfere with your testimony, attitude and ability to function properly, you need to stay away from it.
Medical properties
Did you know that there are several medical benefits to eating grapes?! Just that little bit of fruit can help you. Go figure!! In my research this is some of the things that I discovered about the amazing medical benefits of grapes.
Grapes contain a lot of powerful antioxidants that help deter cancer, high blood pressure, possibly help with heart disease and also that agnoizing and embarrassing problem of constipation. Grapes contain fibers, a wide range of vitamins as well as potassium. With we aging generation, every little bit helps. And it seems the grape is the way to go.
The grape also has an active natural ingredient called resveratrol. This has been linked to some health benefits. The red grape especially has this trait. As a result, it transfers to the wines made from these red grapes. So guess what, drinking red wines offer a great health benefit.
So when you are feeling little fatigued, grab a handful of grapes or better yet drink a glass of fine wine. Not processed punch wines, but a great fine wine processed the right way. These types of wines retain the natural benefits of the grape without the added chemicals and sulfates that “punch wines” use to maintain the same flavor year after year. A true fine wine will have varying tastes from year to year based on the grape. If you are not a member of a fine wine club, you can join today and enjoy the benefit of the grape and wine in one.
The Grape as a snack
I know when I am just hanging around the house I get the munches. Chips or cookies are not always what I want or need. It amazes me just how filling a handful of grapes are to me. Especially the seedless, red globe grapes. I absolutely love them. I pack them for my kids and grandchildren all the time. When we travel, I always have grapes on hand.
During the summer, nothing tastes better than frozen grapes by the pool. Even at the beach, taking a few grapes out and popping a couple in your mouth can make the difference between spoiling your lunch or dinner to lounging another hour in the pool or relaxing on the beach.
